Just days before his 13th birthday, Brad and April Hunstable’s son Hayden died by suicide. After Brad made a video warning other parents of the hidden dangers of the coronavirus pandemic, the family started Hayden’s Corner- a nonprofit aimed at helping parents navigate mental health challenges with their kids.

  • I’m sorry but I don’t believe that he committed suicide because of isolation. His parents not have any family members he could stay with if they saw his mood change due to not having any friends? I would always stay with my cousins during the summer and because he can study from home anywhere they could’ve easily taken him to a friends or family members house.

  • It breaks my heart this boy took his own life. But I know what it takes to commit suicide, especially in a child, and the consequences from Covid are not enough. This is such a misleading report. It makes it sound as though those studies don't know why children today are more anxious and depressed. They (the children) have clearly communicated that they fear for their future, for their ability to pay for college, for the direction this country is taking, for their healthcare, for their safety at school, their parents wellbeing, their dreams and hopes.........They don't feel that security and comfort previous generations felt when they were born here, but they do feel the pressure, tenfold. Since they have been born, the only America they know has been in turmoil.

    JessicaJessica9 күн мурун
  • Why do they make it about the child's character and about the isolation.... there's something they're not telling.... that kid must have been terrified of his dad. Terrified. • This man and woman failed their son! This is a 'surface' human-interest story and there must be more to it than we are being told. One could conclude the father probably didn't believe in the pandemic, was a tRump supporter and has poor coping and teaching skills. The wife, who has suicide in her family didn't even speak to that honestly with her child. It's a terrible shame he committed suicide - but it could have been prevented with better parenting.

  • The rise in depression diagnoses and the attempts and completion of suicide has been rising for over two decades. Teens are becoming less social and more insular. As the number of solo forms of digital/video entertainment grow and parents are forced to spend more hours away from home, children are entertaining themselves alone. For all the hoopla about Fortnite and it's ability to bring millions of people together, there's no real human interconnection. Players aren't playing with each other, they are playing with characters on a screen. Kids are growing up more and more alone because they aren't being 'forced' to socialize with their peers.

Sadly, hearing the story from the father himself it’s clear this kid was addicted to Fortnight and was not mentally mature enough to handle his frustrations and impulses when the game didn’t go his way. He was throwing things and broke his TV. Honestly, the whole thing made me super aware of my kids’ behaviors during and after playing video games and which games we won’t allow now. If anything, this dad’s story is more of a PSA on video game addiction in children...

    • Very true. Sad, but true. Anyone that watched the entire video put out by the father can clearly see that this boy was addicted to Fortnight. It was consuming him. If he broke his TV/monitors, not once, but TWICE, because of throwing this video game controller at it out of frustration during this gameplay most parents would likely recognize that the game had far too much control over his emotions and impulses. This is an extreme case though. Plus, the mother said that suicidal tendencies run in the family. It seems that this situation could have happened with this child even under “normal life” circumstances.

  • Some of these comments are very cruel. As someone who works in behavioral health, circumstances can trigger underlying behavioral disorders that, if not addressed quickly, can lead to things like death by suicide. Human beings are indeed wired for interaction that cannot be replaced by the internet or indoor play-specifically if you are an only child or your siblings are significantly older than you. We also physically need sunlight and fresh air (things that are linked to easing increased dopamine levels and vitamin D to abate depression). Everyone has a right to their opinion. But, as the father said, this doesn't have to be political. COVID-19 is shedding light on a mental health crisis that is not limited to the U.S. The pandemic has made us confront a very terrible reality facing most people. I wish you all good health, both physically and emotionally.

      Cady HillCady Hill9 күн мурун
    • @anybodycanart Hey, sorry that I can't address you by name. Stay at home orders started as early as February 29 (Washington State with their state of emergency); and, the first COVID-19 case in the U.S. was confirmed on January 17, all of this to say that it really was the perfect storm. We might have different vantage points concerning what led to this child's death. But, at least I hope we can collectively see the importance of mental health and take deviations in behavioral patterns and comments about suicide very seriously.

  • Although I feel extremely sad that a child took his life, I do not agree with the parents thinking that quote, "Covid took their son." I have seen other parents in the news with their children whining about how they need to go back to school, not because they feel that their learning will be affected... but that the children miss their friends, so basically they miss recess! These privileged families should sit and watch documentaries of how families living in third world countries have no place to live, and some don't have food or water! Children in India are sold out to business men who will pay a family $200 so that the family can buy a chicken every week instead of just eating rice daily! That child doesn't get to go to school... that child has to work to pay back the $200 that is now a debt!! Children in America have no idea just how blessed they are! And parents need to get a grip about "My child wants to see their friends." Talk to your kids about the children in cages at the Arizona border that "have not played with friends" and cry daily because they haven't seen their parents in years!!! Some have even been sexually abused!!! Thank You Mr. Donald Trump! THE WORSE PRESIDENT IN HISTORY!!!

    • Yes very well said . I just don’t see how these families say their kids are killings themselves due to isolation, this generation spends most of its time online and mostly communicate via devices and social media . Access to that doesn’t stop cause of covid . It seems only during covid everyone is complaining they can’t see people but before covid they didn’t because social media has made a lot of people especially younger people way less social than ever before .

    • Hi, John. There is not a genetic link regarding suicide. However, there is consensus among behavioral health practitioners with regard to the heredity of behavioral disorders, which could lead someone to want to take their life. But, again, we must always consider nurture as well as specific circumstances (poverty, homelessness, living in environmentally hazardous environnements, abuse, hunger, etc) can lead people to develop mental disorders such as clinical depression that can lead to death by suicide.

    • @Traci Ayala Hemingway's mother mailed him a box with a birthday 🍰 cake, it also contained the pistol his father used to commit suicide. Does that sound genetic?

    • Yes. It can go from generation to generation. Also there can be no warnings. Happens a lot more then you think. A lot of people hide it very well.
